Rosacea

What is Rosacea

Rosacea is a progressive skin disorder affecting the facial skin. It is a common dermatosis among light complexioned people 20-50 years of age and is often mistaken for adult acne. It first appears as redness on the cheeks, chin or forehead that may come and go. Left untreated, bumps and pimples develop, redness becomes more permanent, and the blood vessels enlarge, becoming more visible. In more advanced rosacea, the nose may become bumpy, red and swollen from excess tissue. These symptoms can be reduced and its progression may be arrested through medical treatment and lifestyle modifications. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, although studies have shown that many factors can irritate the condition.

Tripwires for Rosacea

The following list covers specific things known to aggravate or cause flare-ups of rosacea in some individuals.

  • Temperature Extremes: Saunas, hot baths, simple overheating, & excessively warm environments.
  • Weather: Sun, strong winds, cold & humidity
  • Emotional: Stress & Anxiety
  • Foods: Dairy products (yogurt, sour cream, cheeses) Vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes, spinach, lima & navy beans, peas) Fruits (avocados, bananas, red plums, raisins, figs, & citrus fruits) Condiments, flavorings (chocolate & vanilla, soy sauce, vinegars) Other (hot & spicy foods, yeast extract- bread is ok)
  • Beverages: Alcohol (especially red wine, beer, bourbon, gin, vodka, champagne) Hot Drinks (hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee, tea)
  • Physical Exertion: Exercise," lift & load" jobs
  • Medical Conditions: Frequent flushing, menopause, chronic cough, caffeine withdrawal syndrome
  • Drugs: Vasodilators, topical steroids (long term use)
  • Skin Care Products: Some cosmetics & hair sprays, especially those containing alcohol, witch hazel or fragrances

Treatment of Rosacea

The selection of rosacea treatment depends on the physician's evaluation of the condition, what symptoms are present, and your own feelings about treatment. Some options may include:

  • Photofacial rejuvenation: In addition to treating pigmented lesions, almost all surface vascular anomalies (red veins, spider veins, and general redness) can be successfully treated in a few sessions with the Medilux Pulsed Light System. This new technique presents a relatively simple, fast and effective skin rejuvenation treatment with minimal discomfort and no downtime.
  • Topical prescription creams or gels: (Rosacea Micro Serum by DerMed, Rosasol, Noritate, Metrogel & Metrocream)
  • Oral Antibiotics: (Tetracycline, Minocycline)
  • Skin Care Products: A mild cleanser (Sensitive Skin Cleanser by DerMed) may be used to wash the face. Rinse your face with lukewarm water to remove all dirt and the cleanser. Let your face rest a few minutes before applying topical medication. Allow the medications to dry completely before applying moisturizer ore make-up. For moisturizing, an oil-free product is recommended. This should be repeated morning and night.
  • Topical Steroids are occasionally used short term to control the redness.
  • Men should use an electric shaver rather than a blade. If a blade is preferred, never use a dull blade that requires extra scraping for a clean shave. Avoid shaving lotions and after-shave products.

Photofacial Rejuvenation

We all want clear skin, but nature has a way of sabotaging us with frustrating imperfections. Luckily, Photofacial technology (which uses lasers and pulsed light to remove skin imperfections) has been growing leaps and bounds, culminating in the Palomar Photofacial Rejuvenation process.

Photofacial rejuvenation uses pulsed light to treat the following problems:

  • Pigmented Lesions (Sunspots or Age Spots) occur in response to the sun-induced skin injury and appear as dark brown circles, known as solar Lentigines. There can also be diffuse browning of the skin, known as Actinic Bronzing.
  • Vascular Lesions-superficial blue, red or purple veins under the skin's surface. Some common types include Rosacea (facial inflammation) and Spider Veins (tiny vessels that appear near the surface of the face).

The Photofacial procedure creates a gentle warming of the skin that induces new collagen formation and helps to reduce fine lines and shrinks pores. You don't have to live with these imperfections! Photofacial Rejuvenation will remove your pigment and vascular lesions to improve your skin texture and tone with quick and easy treatments.

What body areas can I get treated?

Any area, except directly around the eyes. The face, neck, chest, arms, hands, legs, etc. can be treated quickly and safely.

What are Photofacial treatments like?

Quick and easy! After your initial preparation, your treatment provider will move the Palomar pulsed light handpiece over your skin. The handpiece emits a light that breaks up the pigment in the lesion. Most people perceive the light as a gentle snapping sensation, which causes little to no discomfort.

What should I expect after treatment?

Pigmented lesions will darken slightly after treatment, and then fade away after about 10-14 days. Vessels (visible veins) generally undergo immediate graying or blanching and the surrounding area may redden. The vessels then fade after about 10-14 days. Most people experience some mild temporary redness and swelling, similar to a sun burn, in the treated area shortly after treatment. This does not interfere with normal activities and usually subsides within a day. In some cases, the redness may last longer, but will still be mild and temporary. Your treatment provider will explain other, less likely side effects to you.

What is the difference between pulsed light and laser treatments?

Pulsed-light systems and lasers are very similar and treat lesions in basically the same way. However, the Photofacial process uses a new technology that removes imperfections much faster than lasers. Photofacial treatments can fit the busiest person's schedule.

Beauty in the eye(lash) of the beholder

For centuries women have gone to great lengths for beautiful, sexy and alluring eyelashes with stopping power. Introducing the newest revolution in the field of aesthetic medicine – LATISSE™ (bimatoprost topical solution 0.03% w/v) – the first and only prescription eyelash growth product indicated in Canada to grow natural eyelashes longer, fuller and darker.

LATISSE™ is a prescription eyelash growth product applied once-daily to the base of the upper eyelid margin. Lashes grow gradually over time with most people beginning to see longer lashes in about eight weeks, with full growth at 16 weeks. It is applied at home, before bed with a sterile, single-use-per-eye applicator brush.

5 Steps to Longer, Darker and Fuller Eyelashes with LATISSE™

The power of the lash

As listed by RealSelf.com, a free community of consumers and board-certified doctors in the U.S. that offer first-hand experience and information on more than 300 elective cosmetic treatments, LATISSE™ is the most sought after aesthetic treatment today. To-date, approximately 1.5 million bottles of LATISSE™ have been sold in the U.S.

LATISSE was clinically tested in a pivotal phase III, multi-centre, double-masked, placebo-controlled study. LATISSE™ users experienced statistically significant improvements in eyelash prominence, length, fullness and darkness at the end of the 16-week timeframe.

·         78 per cent of patients experienced an increase in overall lash prominence (versus 18.4 per cent for placebo)

·         Patients experienced a 25 per cent increase in eyelash length (versus 2 per cent for placebo)

·         Patients experienced a 106 per cent increase in eyelash thickness / fullness (versus 12 per cent for placebo)

·         Patients experienced an 18 per cent increase in eyelash darkness (versus 3 per cent for placebo)

Eye-catching researchEye-catching Research

The eye category ranks #1 in the Canadian retail market, accounting for 20 per cent of all cosmetic sales. More than half (54 per cent) of women want to grow their own natural eyelashes longer, fuller and darker. Moreover, an overwhelming number of women believe the eyes are important markers of beauty. 70 per cent of women believe big, bright eyes, and long, dark and full lashes are the main facial features that define a beautiful face. In addition, research shows having longer, fuller and darker lashes makes women feel more beautiful, glamorous and confident.

The lash cycle

Three phases of hair growth

The average eyelash moves through each phase before falling out and beginning the cycle all over again – the entire cycle takes about 5 months.

Although the precise mechanism of action is not entirely understood, the growth of eyelashes is believed to occur by increasing the duration of the anagen or growth phase of the hair cycle. Increased thickness and fullness is believed to result from extending the anagen phase and the increase in darkness occurs by the stimulation of pigment (melanin) formation in the hair follicles. The overall effect is increased length, thickness and darkness of eyelashes (prominence).

Maintaining great lengths

According to a recent survey, almost 90 per cent of LATISSE™ users have told their friends and family about LATISSE™ and 75 per cent plan to use it long-term. To keep your lashes looking full and flirty, continued treatment with LATISSE™ is necessary. Once treatment with LATISSE™ is discontinued, over a period of several weeks to months (average eyelash hair cycle), eyelash prominence will return to pre-treatment levels.

LATISSE safety and heritage

LATISSE™ is the same formulation and contains the same active ingredient as LUMIGAN® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%), a glaucoma medication that has been approved in Canada since 2002. The product’s ability to grow longer, darker, thicker lashes was initially discovered through patient reports during clinical trials with glaucoma patients who were using LUMIGAN®.

The safety of LUMIGAN® has been well-established in 32 clinical trials involving more than 5,700 glaucoma patients. It also has more than 13 years of clinical trial experience, with 65 million bottles distributed worldwide to date.

In clinical trials, treatment with LATISSE™ was well tolerated. In one multi-centre, double-masked, randomized, vehicle-controlled, parallel study of four months duration, most adverse events detected were ocular, mild to moderate, and not serious.

The most frequently reported adverse events with the use of LATISSE™ (bimatoprost topical solution 0.03% w/v) were eye pruritus (itchy eyes), conjunctival hyperaemia (eye redness), skin hyperpigmentation, ocular irritation, dry eye symptoms, and erythema (redness) of the eyelid. These events occurred in less than four percent of patients.
